James C. Officer II
Digital Learning Specialist - elearning solutions
My professional journey began in 1995 when I began my working experience in Training and Simulation with Universal Systems and Technologies, Inc. (UNITECH) I was hired as a Level 1 Graphic Artist. I had no idea what a Level 1 Graphic Artist was nor what eLearning meant in terms of the change it will create in the way our society presents information as well as the way we track our users. In my first year I found myself working on a project for HLA - Higher Learning Architecture a Distance Learning project which introducted me to the digital learning medium and how powerful a learning tool it was even then. I learned a great deal about the creative structure and strategies of designing and developing courseware. Being awarded my first freelance opportunity in 1996 with Walt Disney World University. I was being employed to designing user interfaces and animated assets for Walt Disney World University International Management training program. During my 2 years on the Disney contract I was allowed to continue my full-time responsibilities at UNITECH. Being employed by those two companies at such an early time in my experience was an opportunity I appreciate so much more when I speak of my experience.
My focus was to be a graphic designer or animator in movies. 2D animation was popular in that day which made me a really good flash animator. As my journey began in the Department of Defense Training and Simulation industry, my passion and knowledge for visual communication and media being used within courseware felt like a fit. I understood a medium which allowed me to express my creativity using all the tools and toys I had learned to develop with. I scripted for voice over talent and cut footage in post production editing. This experience taught me how to better serve the user experience, designing learning solutions which engage the learner making the information easier to retain. Creating experiences users remember is a reason I am forever grateful for my background in creative design.

Beginning my professional experience as a graphic designer simply responsible for black and white powerpoint presentations provided me with a sound foundational understanding of how to use space. As my career expanded to include marketing and advertising experience. I learned how to use color, fonts and spacing. My experience in advertising taught me a firm understanding as to how to get the best out of the applications I used to create and develop a more visually impressive elearning experience. Applying that knowledge of color, space and balance to storyboards when scripting and video editing during development. I better understood the placement and layout for interactive courseware assets and interactive solutions. Expanded my ability to develiver a visually captivating message using these tools:
Between 2005-2007 I learned the difference between being a freelance consultant and running a business with resources. In 2005 I contracted 5 companies with fixed price services in which they paid on a monthly basis. That model lasted for two years. I was business development and producer, I learned how to time manage and strategically prepare my tasks. As I entered back into the workforce in 2007. I began to lead teams and apply the knowledge I learned about success and failure. In 2015 I was successful in preparing a proposal to win a contract to develop a self-paced learning content libary for Pentaho Inc.
My Creative experienece began with learning animations using a 256 color palette. 2D animations were the best approach for any kind of movement in 1995. As we work today in millions of colors and the technology to create animations ond interactions using code as well as drowing has brought me a long way. Each growth period brought along a new solution or idea on how to use each technology. My experience in advertising and elearning with an agile workflow provides me with a workflow approach the provides a foundation for predictability.
